New Silicon Valley company to focus on Artificial Intelligence

Mercury News today has a story about how Palm co-founders Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky are starting a new company that would enable brain-like computing. Some of the ideas were outlined earlier in Hawkins’ book “On Intelligence.”

The self-funded Menlo Park venture has only four employees, and its research may not show up in the products of its customers for a couple of years. Its ambitions, however, are gargantuan. Hawkins, 47, is attempting one of the largest overhauls in computer design in decades. If he succeeds, computers might really function like brains. That would allow them to mimic human sight and solve problems beyond the reach of today’s computers.
