A startup called LeapFILE says it has developed a product to ease the pain of anyone who has struggled with business file-sharing. Instead of waiting for files to upload and download, or worry about whether you’re working on an obsolete draft, everyone on the team gets a LeapFILE folder on their computer desktop. Files are updated in real-time, and propagated to each user who has “subscribed.”
From the user’s perspective, it’s hard for me to get t0o excited about desktop-based document collaboration — I’m doing just fine with Google Docs, thanks, and Microsoft is also launching a web-based version of Office. But while demonstrating on-stage at DEMOfall 09, the emerging technology conference co-produced by VentureBeat, the company noted that its offering has big security benefits for a company. All of the documents are encrypted, and it’s also possible to remote wipe all the documents in that folder if you lose your laptop.
