DEMO: Veebeam lets you wirelessly share video from your computer on your HDTV

While it’s getting easier to share video and other content from your computer to your HDTV with wires, doing so wirelessly is still a challenge. The startup Veebeam hopes to fix that with its product, which it’s unveiling today at the DEMO conference as the easiest and most affordable way to stream content to your HDTV.

Veebeam’s product consists of two parts: A USB antenna inserted into your PC, and a wireless receiver that plugs into an HDMI port on your HDTV. The two units establish a secure wireless connection, and are capable of streaming HD files up to 1080p resolution from 5 to 10 meters. It’s relying on Wireless USB (WUSB) to make the connection — a short-range wireless standard that offers more bandwidth than Wi-Fi, and also experiences less interference.

The company was founded in 2008, and has 35 employees. It resulted from the merger of Staccato Communications and Artimi, both leaders in the WUSB chip industry. The combined company repositioned itself to create products that took advantage of the new wireless standard.

Veebeam is competing directly with Netgear’s Push2TV technology (which only works with select PC laptops), and indirectly with streaming solutions like the Roku Box, Apple TV, and the upcoming Google TV. The company’s product will be available starting at $99, is compatible with both recent Mac and Windows operating systems, and is one of the only solutions that can stream 1080p video.

The company has offices in San Diego, Calif., and Cambridge, UK. Thus far, it has raised $22 million from Allegis Capital, Amadeus Capital Partners, Endeavour Vision Capital, Formative Ventures, Intel Capital, Noble Venture Finance, and Oak Investment Partners.
