Acer’s on a roll: Launches Android tablets, 4.8-inch smartphone, crazy dual-screen laptop

As promised, computer maker Acer launched a slew of new devices at its press event in New York today — including two Android tablets, a dual-screen laptop/tablet hybrid and a huge 4.8-inch Android smartphone.

Acer’s two Android tablets come in at 10.1 and 7 inches, and still don’t have official names. Both tablets appear to be power houses: They sport a dual-core 1 gigahertz processor, HDMI video output (capable of displaying 1080p video) and a surprisingly sharp 1280 by 800 pixel resolution. The iPad, in comparison, has only a 1024 by 768 px resolution. Both tablets also feature 5 megapixel rear cameras and a front-facing “HD camera.”

The company’s dual-screen tablet/laptop monstrosity, dubbed the Iconia, will run Windows 7 and will sport Acer’s Clear.fi media sharing system. The Iconia features two 14-inch LCD displays in a notebook-like arrangement, forgoing the need for a hardware keyboard completely. Acer’s software keyboard intelligently appears when both of your palms rest on the bottom screen, and it also features a virtual trackpad, number pad and a handwriting mode. Acer isn’t the first company to attempt a dual-screen tablet — both Asus and Toshiba have attempted the same. Just like Toshiba’s device, the Iconia is a concept design by Acer — so don’t expect to see it in stores anytime soon.

Finally, Acer unleashed an unnamed Android phone with a 4.8-inch screen, which it’s calling “100% smartphone, 100% tablet.” It’s slightly smaller than Dell’s 5-inch Streak tablet and features an all-metal case. It features the typical high-end Android specifications with a 1 gigahertz CPU and 8 megapixel camera. Unfortunately for Acer, I can’t imagine too many people are comfortable rocking such a large phone — unless they’re completely oblivious to their own dorkiness.
