Fresh off one of the most legendary media meltdowns of all time, actor Charlie Sheen is now seeking a social media intern to manage his online shenanigans.
It’s a sign of how mainstream social media has become to every business — even the personal brand maintenance on which Hollywood careers are built. And it’s also a sign of how clever startups manage to turn every pop-culture trend into a business opportunity.
The position is listed on Internships.com, a company founded by former MP3.com president Robin Richards. That startup appears eager to ride Sheen’s publicity wave — as soon as the main site opens up, an advertisement for the Sheen internship shows up. Internships.com was founded in 2010 and claims to have more than 40,000 internship applications available across the United States. Companies like Marvel, Sony and Sirius XM also have applications on the site.
Sheen — one of the highest-paid actors on television — was recently punted from his gig on TV show Two and a Half Men after reports of drug and alcohol abuse made headlines throughout the week. Sheen’s philosophies were particularly popular on Twitter, the microblogging network on which he attracted a million subscribers in his first day. His pet phrases generated a number of trending topics on the service, which Twitter has recently started promoting heavily on its mobile app in an attempt to create new venues for advertising, which has only recently become a focus for the well-funded company.

Applicants for the position should have tiger blood in their veins and must be all about winning, according to the site where the application is posted, in a nod to two of Sheen’s favored twitticisms. The internship is naturally a full-time gig — eight weeks throughout the summer.
“The #TigerBloodIntern is expected to be proactive, monitor the day-to-day activities on the major social media platforms, prepare for exciting online projects and increase Charlie’s base of followers,” according to the site, which titled the position in the form of a hashtag, an abbreviated format Twitter users favor for tagging a post with a particular topic. “You will learn how to promote and develop the social media network of Hollywood’s most trending celebrity.”
Social-media savvy folks who have a penchant for winning should be sure to apply before the deadline Friday.
