Pegatron now aims to ship 10M iPhone 5s in September

The iPhone 5 rumors keep coming: Device manufacturer Pegatron has received orders to build and ship 10 million iPhone 5 units for September, the Taiwanese news site Digitimes reports.

We previously reported (also via Digitimes) that Pegatron would be shipping 15M iPhone 5s in September. Pegatron also reportedly landed the contract to build Apple’s iPad 3 later this year — which, if true, proves the company’s quest to dethrone Apple’s current manufacturing partner Foxconn is taking shape.

If the news about Pegatron’s iPhone 5 shipments is true, it could debunk a report from earlier this week that suggested the iPhone 5 would actually be released in October. That report countered the general assumption that the device would land in September.

Pegatron previously has been the manufacturer tasked with building the CDMA (Verizon-capable) iPhone. The iPhone 5 is expected to be both GSM and CDMA compatible, so it could work across all major US cellular networks and be ready for international usage as well. We already know that the current Verizon iPhone has hardware that would allow it to work on other networks.

Pegatron last year upgraded its equipment, factories and worker numbers to handle iPhone 4 orders. The company had the capacity to build 10 million CDMA-compatible iPhone 4s (the Verizon iPhone), but lower than expected sales led to it shipping fewer than 4 million units in the last quarter. Pegatron is also vying to win other contracts from Apple, such as building the MacBook Air.
