HTC announces Radar and Titan, powered by Windows Phone 7 Mango

HTC today finally revealed its first phones running Windows Phone 7’s new Mango update: the mid-range Radar and high-end Titan.

The phones pack little in the way of surprises, but their hardware is a good sign for other Windows Phone 7 Mango devices on the horizon. The new devices will serve as a much-needed update to the Windows Phone lineup, which for the most part hasn’t been updated since the platform’s launch last fall.

The Radar features a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, 3.7-inch display, 5-megapixel camera, and 512MB of RAM. That’s not too bad, considering the phone will likely retail below the typical $200 price with contract.

The Titan, on the other hand, lives up to its name. It sports a 1.5GHz processor, massive 4.7-inch screen and 8-megapixel camera. Both phones feature low-resolution VGA front-facing cameras, which are newly supported in Mango.

While the Titan is indeed huge, it’s also surprisingly thin at 9.9 millimeters. Unfortunately, its large screen is still a relatively low-res 800 by 480 resolution, which means that it won’t be able to display as much detail as a higher-resolution phone like the iPhone 4.

Both phones are expected to be available some time in early October. Unfortunately, Microsoft has yet to announce when the Mango update will be made available to existing Windows Phones, but word is that it will happen in mid-September.
