Sega 3D Classics Collection is a disc version of the publisher’s excellent 3DS digital remasters

Sega teased an announcement yesterday for fans of “the classics,” and now we know that it is planning a physical release of some of the games it has released over the last few years on 3DS.

Sega 3D Classics Collection is coming to North America on April 26 for $30. This brings together games that players have already had access to on the 3DS eShop like Sonic The Hedgehog, Altered Beast, and Thunder Blade. But Sega is also introducing two new remasters that it hasn’t released outside of Japan. These include Power Drift and Puyo Puyo 2.

Remasters and rereleases are popular among established publishers. That’s because they are typically inexpensive to update, and these games often have name recognition with gamers. This is typically enough to generate a decent amount of profit from these sorts of projects.

While these are all retro games that originally debuted in the arcade or on Genesis in the 1980s and 1990s, Sega has worked with developer M2 to add stereoscopic 3D support to these games. This adds an impressive layer of depth to games that previously only had flat two-dimensional art.

Here’s the full list of games in the collection:

• Power Drift — A racing game with crazy courses.
• Puyo Puyo 2 — The competitive puzzle game that never got an English localization. Sega is leaving it in Japanese even for its Western release.
• Maze Walker — Genesis maze-running game that had SegaScope 3-D glasses support.
• Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa — A scrolling shooter for the Genesis.
• Fantasy Zone II W — The arcade version of the Fantasy Zone II.
• Thunder Blade — A helicopter-based shooting game.
• Galaxy Force II — A space-based shooting game.
• Altered Beast — The side-scrolling beat-em-up where the player character can turn into a variety of powerful monsters.
• Sonic The Hedgehog — The classic Genesis mascot platformer.

That’s a pretty decent list — although we’re disappointed that this collection doesn’t have some of the best classic 3D games Sega has released. In particular, we would love to see Outrun 3D on here, since that game looks amazing with 3D support.

Of course, Sega is probably saving something for Sega 3D Classics Collection 2, and we’ve asked the publisher if that is in the works as well.
