Reading Rainbow is making a big comeback, and it’s skipping your TV in favor of the other screen in your living room: your iPad.

In an in-depth chat in VentureBeat’s San Francisco studio, Reading Rainbow host LeVar Burton talked about how the reincarnation came to be. As always, Burton was the consumate storyteller, and he conveyed his deep belief that technology should be used not just for profit but for good.

We also got a hands-on demo of the new app, which contains classic videos from the show as well as new, interactive content. The Reading Rainbow iPad app is priced as a subscription, and it’s a tad on the pricey side ($9.99 per month or $29.99 for six months).

But c’mon, you’re using the iPad as a babysitter anyway, and at least with this app, you’re getting some of the best, highest-quality content that you’re going to find on any tablet.
