Despite the recent announcement of the bigger Nintendo 3DS XL, the original handheld just crossed over the 5 million units sold mark in the U.S. Nintendo sold 150,000 3DS units in June alone.
“Nintendo 3DS is entering the next phase of its life cycle with new hardware, new games, and proven franchies,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing, in a statement. “This milestone shows we’ve got a great foundation to build from.”
June was a very good month for Nintendo, according to the current NPD Group figures. The company sold 440,000 hardware units and saw double-digit grow across each of its product lines since May. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time also became the third 3DS title to sell over a million units, following closely on the success of Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7.
It will be interesting to see how the launch of the 3DS XL and New Super Mario Bros. 2 on August 19 affects the handheld’s growth.
