Like sand through an hourglass, another massively multiplayer online game is now free-to-play. This time it’s Sony Online Entertainment’s Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, a fantasy-based MMO that tasks players with defending the land of Telon from dragons, wizards, and other magical creatures.
Starting today, players will be able to choose from two membership options, “Free” and “Gold.” The former won’t cost anything, hence the name, but it will limit users to a select handful of races and classes, with all classes playable up to level 20 and some playable up to level 55. The Gold option will cost $14.99 a month and will grant access to all classes, races, and features.
Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is now a part of SOE’s impressive stable of free-to-play MMOs, including the Everquest games, Free Realms, and DC Universe Online (which made the switch last November). With the recent announcement that Star Wars: The Old Republic would also be free later this year, it seems like only a matter of time until all online games have some sort of free option.
Those looking to download Vanguard can do so at the game’s official site.
