Facebook’s official iOS app has gotten yet another update. Now, the app offers support for the new iPhone 5 and iOS 6.

In addition to general bug squashes and performance boosters, the new Facebook for iOS brings superfast News Feed scrolling, a new banner that shows more stories when you tap it (no refresh required), instant access to notifications, and a quick new way to get to photos with a single downward swipe.

All this comes on the heels of Facebook’s ground-up overhaul of its iOS app.

The rebuild, which rolled out less than a month ago, scrapped a bunch of HTML5 code that Facebook had somewhat optimistically incorporated into its native iOS app, turning instead to good ol’ Objective C, the native code language for iPhones, iPods, and iPads. The results were instant speed and performance improvements and a signifiant poo-storm among mobile web and open-source advocates.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said just a couple weeks after the revamped app’s release, “The biggest mistake we’ve made as a company is betting on HTML5 over native.” Strong words from the company leading the charge for mobile web technologies.

In a revised series of statements at a press meeting, Facebookers said they are, indeed, still working hard on mobile web and HTML5 technologies — just not for iOS, not right now.

In non-Apple-flavored news, Facebook also rolled out a couple new releases for its Android apps today.
