The coolest mech game this side of the 23rd century will get its first beta test by the end of October.

Hawken, from developer Adhesive Games, is a free-to-play first-person robot shooter for the PC. It plays a bit like Call of Duty, only with players controlling 16-feet-tall armored suits instead of soldiers. Publisher Meteor Entertainment, which plans to release the game December 12, has run two rounds of closed alpha tests. This initial closed beta runs Oct. 26 – 29.

“The team has worked tirelessly to launch the closed beta,” Adhesive Games creative director Khang Le said. “Thanks to the awesome community, we learned a great deal from the alpha 2 feedback. We’re super excited about opening the gate and having a larger fan base playing Hawken for the very first time.”

Users can sign up for a chance to enter the beta at the official website. I’ve had some hands-on time with the game but can’t say much. At the very least, I think you should get over and claim your Hawken username — you’re probably going to want that when this game hits.
