Among Apple’s many announcements today was the Fusion Drive, a hybrid hard drive that combines solid state storage with a traditional hard drive technology.
The Fusion Drive will be available in the latest iMac and Mac mini, where it will come with a 128GB SD and the option of either a 1TB or 3TB HDD.
While these sort of fusion drives are nothing new, the technology has mostly been a niche product. Apple, it seems, is looking to change that.

This combination of software and hardware, Apple Product VP Phil Schiller said, allows Fusion Drive to figure out which apps people use the most and move those to the solid state portion of the drive. That, in turn, should improve load speeds and performance.
“It’s the speed of Flash and the size of a hard drive,” Schiller said.
