AOL has released new information today about the most popular video content in 2012 from its AOL On Network, which has some surprising findings you wouldn’t expect (and a bunch that you probably would).
For instance, AOL’s news-based video content gained nearly 1.5 billion views, which is almost three times as many views as its entertainment content and more than all its other categories combined (Entertainment, Style, Food, and Health). I suppose that makes sense with the large push that AOL is making to transform the Huffington Post into a live-streaming video network.
The most watched events include (unsurprisingly) the Olympics, the 2012 presidential election, two award shows, and Hurricane Sandy. The AOL team even provided viewing stats for which celebrities gained the most eyeballs for the year (none of which deserve a spotlight).

AOL is currently one of the top 10 video destinations in the world, and brings in 53 million unique visitors per month, according to the October 2012 comScore Media Metrix report. That said, its “snapshot” of the most popular/discussed/shared/etc. videos of the year should be a fairly accurate representation of what people are actually watching online.
