Gesture-based email startup Boxer announced today that it has acquired Enhanced Email, an Android email client that provides more polish and functionality than the standard email application that’s built into the Android operating system.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The Enhanced Email app, which costs $10 to download, is consistently among the top email apps in the Google Play Store. The startup’s two employees will join Boxer and help it develop an Android version of its super slick iOS email app.

“Development on Android has mostly been about filling gaps in functionality over the last few years,” Boxer CEO Andrew Eye told VentureBeat. “That’s why carriers always released their own email clients that do more than just the stock Google email app. And that’s also why Enhanced Email has done so well.”

Eye said the Enhanced Email team has already drastically sped up development of the Boxer Android app, which is due out in the near future.

Current Enhanced Email users will get the forthcoming Boxer Android app for free when it launches. And beginning today, the startup is also inviting Android users to sign up for a beta version of Boxer’s Android app prior to the launch.

Austin, Texas-based Boxer has raised $3.8 million in funding to date. The startup, which competes with Dropbox-owned Mailbox, recently released an iPad version and integration with a variety of productivity and enterprise services.
