Bitglass nabs huge $10M first round for … it is a mystery

Bitglass: Google it! You will find nothing — nothing, we tell you! — related to some of the most interesting funding news of the day: a stealth startup sealing a $10 million Series A.

The proof lies in this SEC filing, which tells a rather sparse story of a Palo Alto, Calif.-based company founded by one Balas Natarajan “Nat” Kausik, who is listed as CEO.

We did some sleuthing (read: a more-than-halfhearted web search) on Kausik and found out a few relevant tidbits. First, he authored a book on machine learning back in 1991. Second, his name is linked to a slew of patents related to web technologies, cryptography, “roaming” users, application performance, etc.

Kausik worked at HP as a principle scientist in the late 1980s through 1997. He was also an entrepreneur-in-residence at New Enterprise Associates (NEA), a venture capital firm.

The nascent company’s CTO is Anurag Kahol, formerly of Cisco, where Kausik worked from 2000 to 2006, and Juniper Networks.

Investors listed on the Form D include Norwest Venture Parters’ Matthew Howard and NEA general partner Dr. Forest Baskett.

The only copy on the startup’s single-page website reads, “Huge market. Super team. Top investors.”

We got wind of the funding when Kausik himself sent us a four-sentence e-mail naming the investors, stating they’ll be joining the board, and indicating that the funding “will be used to develop the company’s technology and products.”

We asked Kausik for any more information about the company or his story and haven’t yet heard back. All we’ve got at this point is a small mystery with a ton of clues, two mature co-founders with big-boy provenance in the IT world, and a huge first round of funding from a couple reputable firms. We’ll definitely keep multiple ears to the ground for more on this startup.
