Either 3D printing has totally jumped the shark, or it’s hitting the mainstream.
Maybe both.
In any case, Disney has definitely jumped — on the 3D printing bandwagon. You can now turn yourself in to a real, live (sort of) Disney action figure: a Imperial Stormtrooper. Inspired, Disney says, by a scene from Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, the action figure will be 7.5-inches tall and, of course, have your smiling face.
Fortunately, the figurine’s helmet is off, so your face is visible.

It’s part of the “D-tech weekends” at Disney’s Star Wars celebrations, and you’ll need to be at the company’s Hollywood Studios to get the figurine. You need to book the experience, which involved a 10-minute photo shoot of your face by what Disney says is “the world’s highest-resolution, single-shot 3D face scanner,” created by Disney’s own Imagineers, working with Disney Research Labs.
Photo done, the shot is sent to Disney’s high-res 3D printers and the completed Mini-you aka Imperial Stormtrooper will be in the mail and at your home within 7-8 weeks.
For more details, and how to reserve your shoot, check Disney’s site.
