Plague coming to Defiance TV show — but you can stop it in the game

If you’ve always wanted to have an impact on something, now is your chance. The characters in the SyFy network show Defiance need some help.

Publisher Trion Worlds announced today that a free content update is available for its online shooter that takes place in the same world and is also titled Defiance. This new expansion features a major mission where players must stop a plague before it reaches the characters on the TV show. The resulting show will change depending on whether the players succeed or not.

In addition to the outbreak mission, the add-on content includes a variety of other in-game quests and items.

The effected episode airs June 17. The seven days leading up to that will also see an all-new mission accessible within the game.

Defiance is a transmedia experiment. The game and the show both launched in April, and the creators of both always promised fans that the two would interconnect with each other. Now it’s up to SyFy and Trion to prove that isn’t just a gimmick.

Defiance airs on Monday nights on SyFy at 9 p.m. Eastern.
