Backend as a service. BaaS. It just makes us think about twerking. And like twerking, it’s worth a fair amount of money if you do it right.

We jest. The point is, Point.io launches today. It’s a backend-as-a-service startup for both “geeks” and “suits,” to use the startup’s terminology, and it’s making its debut with a nice $1.5 million seed round from unnamed investors.

The company comes from Wayne, Penn. In addition to the funding, it’s releasing a reference app for iOS and announcing partnership with mobile app developer Stratospherix. We’re guessing they’ve been busy.

Naming Parse and Kinvey as competitors, the Point.io team says its BaaS platform enables developers to build enterprise-grade applications for mobile devices and public clouds.

And with the partnership with Stratospherix, a U.K.-based mobile/enterprise app shop, the Point.io’s BaaS will immediately be accessible to around 600,000 developer-users and corporate-users around the world.

“By design, enterprises have been locking down their content for decades, but with the shift in workforce mobility it’s become critical that content, and the workflows that thrive on it, are unleashed to devices beyond the corporate firewall,” said Ron Rock, the CEO of Point.io, in a statement on the news.

“We are making it possible for businesses to embrace mobile access to corporate work and are fundamentally changing the way real work gets done.”
