If you feel like the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are missing that special something that makes them feel like a leap forward in technology, then maybe Sony has something for you.
Sony reportedly plans to unveil a virtual-reality headset for its PlayStation 4, according to a rumor from Eurogamer. The new device is reportedly similar to the Oculus Rift VR visor that creates a wrap-around 3D image that gamers can look around to view.
The Eurogamer rumor claims that Sony is demonstrating the VR helmet to its developers using Evolution Studios’ PS4 launch title DriveClub. The demo puts players into the cockpit of an automobile in which they can look around and feel like they are inside of the car.
Evolution Studios houses Sony’s Worldwide Studios Stereoscopic 3D division, which helped Sony push 3D for its games and televisions in 2011. Sony also has the HMZ-T2 3D headgear that displays 3D content but doesn’t feature the head-tracking technology that Oculus VR uses to make people feel like they are in the game.
We’ve reached out to Sony for comment. We have not received a response, but we’ll update this post with any new information.
The Oculus Rift is currently the biggest name in consumer virtual reality. It began as a Kickstarter project in 2012 that ended up raising $2.4 million. Many studios and backers received their development kits and are building software for the device. Oculus VR is currently working on the high-definition version of the Rift, which it plans to launch as a consumer device in 2014.
