Nintendo probably won’t have the headline gaming product this fall. Sony’s and Microsoft’s next-gen systems are duking it out for that honor, but the Wii U is getting a new 3D Mario game that looks terrific.
Nintendo released a new trailer for Super Mario 3D World this morning that reveals more of the company’s first high-definition 3D Mario platformer in action. The video focuses on the new powerups and items as well as the four playable characters. The title hits Wii U on Nov. 22 for $60.
Like in 1988’s Super Mario Bros. 2, players can choose to control Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, or Toad. Each have different abilities, like Luigi’s extra-high jumps and Peach’s hovering.
Powerups include a cat suit that enables the players to claw up walls and scratch enemies. It’s delightful from what we played of the game.
Another interesting item is the Double Mario cherry, which gives you another Mario every time you pick one up. No, that doesn’t mean you get an extra life — it literally gives you an additional doppelgänger Mario to control alongside your original character. Every time you pick up one of the cherries, you’ll get another Mario. The trailer shows the player guiding up to five Marios around, but it’s possible that isn’t the limit.
Surely, this confirms my long-held fears of a Crisis of Infinite Marios.
Other returning powerups include the Fire Flower, the Boomerang Mario suit, and the Mega Mushroom. Despite “Mario” appearing in the name of a lot of these items, they should work on all of the playable characters.
