Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto doesn’t want Super Mario Galaxy fans to get too sad because Nintendo might eventually make another sequel in that sub-franchise.
Speaking in an official Nintendo interview series called “Iwata Asks” — where Nintendo chief executive Satoru Iwata asks his employees questions about their products — Miyamoto confirmed that a new Galaxy game is still a possibility. The development team responsible for Super Mario Galaxy just finished up Super Mario 3D World for the Wii U (it comes out Nov. 22), which many might take to mean that Nintendo is finished with the Galaxy titles.
“Just so there is no misunderstanding, I should point out that [Super Mario 3D World] doesn’t mean we’ll never make another Super Mario Galaxy game,” Miyamoto said. “The same team can’t make both at the same time. And we can’t bring in a second party and slap the name Super Mario Galaxy on it.”
Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 were the premiere 3D platforming games from Nintendo for the Wii console. The took Mario into space and had him running around tiny spherical planets and facing off against Bowser.
Super Mario 3D World producer Yohiaki Koizumi explained that he believes the new title will appeal to a greater number of people than Super Mario Galaxy.
“I think the deep-blue image of space and the impression you get from the title was more geared toward boys,” said Koizumi. “I felt like a player-character you might want to choose besides Mario was necessary to convince, say, my wife to feel comfortable picking it up and playing. This time, we welcomed in Princess Peach, so you can play as a female character. In that way, I feel like we filled in a piece that had been missing.”
In addition to Peach and Mario, gamers can play as Luigi or Toad as well. It also continues the fixed-angle camera from Super Mario 3D Land for the 3DS that means gamers don’t have to fight with the camera as much.
