If you want some old Sega Genesis games with a third dimension thrown in for the hell of it, Sega’s got your back.
The publisher released two new games to the eShop digital-distribution store for the 3DS today: Sonic the Hedgehog and Altered Beast. Only these aren’t just straight ports: Sega added depth to the Genesis games to take advantage of the 3DS’s stereoscopic capabilities.
Both games went on sale today for $6.
Sega isn’t stopping with just Sonic and Altered Beast, though. Next week, the publisher will release 3D versions of Ecco the Dolphin and Galaxy Force II. The week after that, Sega will debuted 3D Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master and 3D Streets of Rage.
We’ve reached out to Sega to ask if it plans to continue with this series for games like Sonic The Hedgehog 2 or Streets of Rage 2. We’ll update this article with its response.
Sonic the Hedgehog first debuted in 1991 for Sega’s Genesis console. It puts players in control of the blue hedgehog as he speeds through roller coaster-like levels. Altered Beast began life as an arcade game in 1988 before jumping to the Genesis in North America in 1989. It has players taking on the role of a Roman centurion who can transform into a werewolf, a dragon, a bear, and a tiger at different points in the adventure. It’s a standard side-scrolling beat-em-up that Sega initially packed in with the Genesis.
