The Spike TV VGX awards show named Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto V as Game of the Year.

The open-world action-adventure game, which sold more than $1 billion in its first three days, was developed over five years at a reported cost of $260 million. It made back that investment, it appears, in about eight hours worth of retail sales when it went on sale in September.

The nominees for Game of the Year included Irrational Games and 2K Games’ BioShock Infinite, Nintendo’s Super Mario 3D World, Sony and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us, and Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics’ Tomb Raider.

I’m bummed, as I thought the winners would be a toss-up between BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us.
