Developer Polytron has sold over 1 million copies of the mind-bending puzzler Fez.

The digital-download title, which is ostensibly about changing the perspective of a 2D character in a 3D space, is a massive big hit for the small studio. Fez debuted in April 2012 for Xbox 360 before quickly moving over to PC, Linux, and Mac. Polytron is now working with developer Blitworks to port Fez to PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita.

“That’s right, a cool mil, and we couldn’t have done it without you,” reads a post on Polytron’s website. “Thank you for buying the game! Thank you for stealing it! Thank you for telling your friends about it! Thank you for buying it again when it came out on PC!”

The studio even thanked some of its critics for “boycotting [Fez] so well.”

In March 2012, Polytron founder and Fez creator Phil Fish said “gamers are the worst fucking people.” This led some to call for gaming fans to boycott Fez. Those efforts obviously did not prevent the game from selling 1 million copies.

“Thank you for putting up with the bullshit,” continues the Polytron blog.

In June, Fish announced that he was developing a sequel to Fez during the Horizon Indie summit held alongside the Electronic Entertainment Expo industry trade show. Nearly two months later, Fish announced that he was cancelling Fez II and quitting the industry due to “abuse” from gamers.
