Hackers have stolen customer credit card data from the upscale retailer Neiman Marcus. The theft was reported by Brian Krebs at Krebs on Security.
The retail chain confirmed to Krebs that it is working with the U.S. Secret Service to investigate a hacker break-in that has exposed an unknown number of customer cards. The breach is similar to the hack that netted thieves data on 110 million customers at the Target retail chain during the busy holiday season.
Neiman Marcus said the reach occurred in mid-December, but the company made no announcement of the attack at that time, but it did inform the U.S. Secret Service, payment brands, its credit card processor, and other forensics investigators to get to the root of the cause. On Jan. 1, the forensics team found that the company was the victim of a criminal cyber-security intrusion and that customer card data was compromised. The company said it is taking steps to inform customers of the breach.
