AMD launches its latest low-cost graphics chip for gamers

Advanced Micro Devices is launching a new graphics chip today that brings high-end gaming features to low-end PCs. The chip maker is unveiling the AMD Radeon R7 265 graphics chip at a $149 price point that makes high-end 3D graphics available to a wider group of gamers.

The new card offers features such as a default 2GB of GDDR5 memory on a fast memory pathway (256-bit memory bus). It uses AMD’s Graphics Core Next and more efficient PowerTune power-consumption technology. It can drive six monitors at once, and it supports AMD’s new Mantle driver as well as DirectX 11.2.

The graphics cards using the chip will be available from a variety of vendors in late February. Meanwhile, AMD will cut the price of the existing AMD Radeon R7 260X to $119.
