Blogging platform Tumblr is eyeing new monetization strategies post acquisition, according to product VP Derek Gottfrid.
Following Yahoo’s acquisition, Tumblr is considering a number of revenue-centric changes — one of which involves setting up an ad network to distribute sponsored posts to third-party sites, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Such an ad network, reportedly described by Gottfrid, would send Tumblr’s “highly visual and social ads to other sites, beginning with Yahoo and others it owns.” The concept would be an interesting move for Tumblr, as the firm has long struggled to find monetization avenues that do not alienate existing users.
This idea, however, is not Tumblr’s only option. Gottfrid hinted that Tumblr may debut a Facebook-style ad exchange in which advertisers target users by demographic.
