Ubisoft is about to release the next entry in its motorcycle-platforming series on consoles and PC next week, and — like other multiplatform games — it has a slightly higher resolution on the PlayStation 4 than on the Xbox One.
Trials Fusion hits Wednesday for the PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 (and PC on April 24), and developer RedLynx promises that it runs at a smooth 60 frames per second on all of those systems. It will not, however, run at the same resolution. Ubisoft has confirmed to GamesBeat that Fusion will run at 1080p on PS4 and 900p on Xbox One. Those numbers refer to the number of horizontal lines the game is rendering for every frame of animation.
This is just the latest game to hit both machines that runs at full HD on Sony’s but not Microsoft’s.
This was an issue at the consoles’ launch as well. Publisher Activision’s massively popular shooter Call of Duty: Ghosts ran at 720p on Xbox One but 1080p on PS4. EA’s Battlefield is 720p on the Microsoft box and 900p on Sony’s. Ubisoft’s own Assassin’s Creed 4 was 900p on Xbox One and 1080p on PS4.

This has caused some fans to voice concerns over the power of the Xbox One. While both devices feature a similar processors from AMD called Jaguar, Sony’s device has 8GB of superfast RAM while the latest Xbox uses 8GB of slower, less expensive memory.
Some fans find Xbox One’s graphical struggles especially unacceptable due to the hardware’s price. Xbox One sells for $500 while Sony is only charging $400 for PS4.
Some games on Xbox One do reach a resolution of 1080p while also running at 60 frames per second. Forza 5 is capable of this, and some gamers continue to hope that as developers get more familiar with the Xbox One, they’ll be able to squeeze better performance out of it. That might happen, but studios are still getting a bit more power out of the PS4.
At the same time, while the Xbox One version of Trials Fusion renders at 900p, the system upscales that to 1080p. It is very unlikely that most people will have the ability to tell difference between the PS4 and Xbox One versions — especially if they are sitting more than a few feet away on a couch.
