Pinterest is acquiring visual organization tool Icebergs. Pinterest will discontinue the Icebergs service in September, according to Icebergs’ website.

Icebergs is very similar to Pinterest, but it’s even more geared toward designers. It allows users to group uploaded images, videos, and websites as well as add notes to those groups or projects.

Icebergs organizational tools would certainly bring some added function to Pinterest’s existing platform, which might represent a shift in strategy. Rather than being a pinboard for everyone, Pinterest may be trying to capture a larger slice of the design community with better utility.

Malorie Lucich, a spokesperson for Pinterest’s product side, says she wouldn’t call it a “shift” necessarily.

“The focus this year is on making pins more useful so that people can act on them, and giving people relevant recommendations related to their interests — this goes for people both in their personal and professional lives,” She says. Lucich also says she’s seen a uptick in professionals using the site.

The social bulletin board site has been launching a lot of new features this year, including a guided search function and new categories (ie. ‘art’ or ‘hiking’) that people can follow like they would another user.

“While we won’t be integrating their specific technology, a lot of the product areas they we’re focusing on relate to our areas of focus around planning, organization, and discovery of objects,” says Lucich.

Icebergs two co-founders, César Isern and Albert Pereta will be joining Pinterest’s product design and product management teams in San Francisco. Lucich won’t say when we’ll see services similar to Icebergs, only that the company will be launching new products before the end of the year.
