T-Mobile is on a roll, and it shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
The carrier gained more than 1.5 million customers in the second quarter, it announced today, making it the fifth sequential quarter in which it added more than a million customers. T-Mobile now has 50.5 million customers in total (last year’s MetroPCS acquisition added around 9 million).
And with more customers comes more revenue: T-Mobile saw revenues of $7.2 billion during the quarter, resulting in a net profit of $391 million. At this time last year, T-Mobile reported a $54 million loss on $6.2 billion in revenues.
The core to T-Mobile’s success isn’t a huge mystery. Its “Uncarrier” initiatives, including things like an early upgrade program, free data for international travel and tablets, and its recent iPhone test program, all push the boundaries of what consumers expect from carriers. And even though AT&T and Verizon are both twice the size of T-Mobile, they’ve been forced to react to the more compelling Uncarrier plans (we wouldn’t see early upgrade programs from AT&T and Verizon without T-Mobile doing it first).
