Amazon today revealed that its “Fire” smartphone will launch in the U.K. and Germany on September 30, a predictable move following the company’s lackluster U.S. debut.
Coupled with this expansion, Amazon also announced a massive price cut to the under-performing smartphone today. The device now retails for $1 with a two-year contract on AT&T in the U.S. — down significantly from the smartphone’s launch price of $199.
Although the Fire phone launched with quite a bit of hype, early reports suggest that the device has so far performed poorly. A lower price coupled with new international availability could help Amazon drive much-needed sales.
Amazon’s Fire phone will arrive in Europe nearly one month before the Fire TV launches in the U.K. and Germany on October 23. As we reported last week, this announcement also follows the February debut of Amazon’s video streaming service in the U.K. and Germany.
