We’ve waited a long time for Final Fantasy XV, and we’ll probably have to wait a bit longer.
According to Hajime Tabata, who just took over directing duties for the anticipated sequel, development on the game is about 50 percent to 60 percent complete, according to an interview with Game Informer. However, this is largely because work on the game started over pretty much from scratch when Tabata joined the project about two years ago, which was also when developer Square Enix started to rework the game for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
Final Fantasy XV was originally announced as Final Fantasy Versus XIII back in 2006. After a long period of silence on the role-playing game’s progress, Square Enix re-revealed it as numbered entry in the storied franchise. Tetsuya Nomura was originally directing, but he recently left the project to focus on Kingdom Hearts III, another long-awaited entry in a beloved Square Enix franchise.
Square Enix will include a demo for Final Fantasy XV with Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, an action-based spin-off of the main series which comes out next March for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
