Box unveils ClusterRunner, an open-source tool to test code fast

As a fast-growing cloud file-sharing software company, Box needs to deploy new versions of its software in a timely fashion, and that requires an efficient code-testing process. Box built an internal tool to meet its needs, and today it’s releasing the tool into the wild.

The tool, ClusterRunner, “allows us to easily run any test job while promising to provide the fastest and most efficient results,” according to a blog post today from Box engineering services manager Tim Bozarth.

ClusterRunner reflects the complexity in place at Box, which has more than 100,000 tests available to ensure code runs correctly, Bozarth wrote.

“If your team is already running at scale, the value of ClusterRunner is it’s ability to speed up test feedback while using test infrastructure efficiently,” he wrote. “If you’re just starting up, ClusterRunner can guarantee your test feedback stays quick as your teams (and test suites!) grow. Regardless of your organization size, ClusterRunner can enable you to deliver fast test results while making it easy to keep them fast over the long-haul.”

Available now on GitHub under an Apache 2.0 license, ClusterRunner is the latest open-source project for Box to share with the world free of charge. You can also check out the dedicated ClusterRunner website.

Box announced an open-source initiative back in April.
