Today Facebook announced that over 500 million people now use the company’s standalone messaging app ‘Messenger‘ every month.

This is a key milestone for Facebook, as the company’s risky unbundling strategy, a strategy which angered quite a few users, appears to have worked.

Facebook celebrated the news on its blog but cautioned that “there is so much left for us to do” — hinting, perhaps, at the company’s payments-related experiments.

More, from Facebook:

Today more than 500 million people are using Messenger each month and we’re more committed than ever to make it the best possible messaging experience.

This is an exciting milestone but with a half billion people relying on Messenger to communicate and connect, it is also a reminder that there is so much left for us to do.
