The guys who practically invented pointing and clicking in adventure games are back.

LucasArts veterans Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick announced a new game today called Thimbleweed Park. It is a point-and-click adventure made in the style of Maniac Mansion or Monkey Island complete with blocky visuals and a huge menu of interactive options. Gilbert and Winnick have taken Thimbleweed Park to Kickstarter, and they’re asking fans to contribute $375,000 to help with development.

“Thimbleweed Park is a new game that cuts to the core of what made classic point-and-click adventure games so special,” reads the Kickstarter project page. “And [it’s] done by the actual people who spawned the genre. It’s deep, it’s challenging, it’s funny, it’s everything you loved about adventure games.”

Thimbleweed Park follows the story of two detectives who are investigating a dead body that washed up in a river outside of the town. Across five playable characters, you’l uncover more about the dark and odd Thimbleweed Park.

Gilbert and Winnick are making it clear who they are targeting with Thimbleweed. The developers are saying that they want you to feel like you opened up an old desk drawer and stumbled upon a LucasArts game you never knew existed.

Kickstarter projects that focus on gamer nostalgia have found success before, and it’s likely this one will as well.

Gilbert and Winnick are planning an 18-month development cycle, so don’t expect to have your hands on Thimbleweed before 2016.
