Microsoft to hold Windows 10 ‘consumer experience’ event in Redmond on January 21

Microsoft today announced it will revealing “the next chapter of Windows 10” at its Redmond, Washington campus on January 21. As previously revealed, the company says it will be talking about the Windows 10 “consumer experience” at the event, which starts at 9:00 a.m. PST.

The company’s senior leaders, including executive vice president of the operating systems group Terry Myerson, corporate vice president of the operating systems group Joe Belfiore, and head of Microsoft’s Xbox division and Microsoft Studios Phil Spencer, will all be present. Microsoft chief executive Satya Nadella will also make an appearance, though it’s not clear in what capacity.

If you can’t make the event, don’t worry; Microsoft plans to have a “live webcast” for those who want to view from home or work. VentureBeat will also be present to get you all the latest details as they’re revealed.

While Microsoft doesn’t explicitly say so, the main expectation is that the company will finally detail Windows 10 on other devices. We already know how the operating system looks on PCs, but tablets and smartphones are still a mystery, though some information has started to leak out.

Microsoft first unveiled Windows 10 at a September 30 event in San Francisco. Microsoft then released the first Windows 10 preview, build 9841, on October 1 as part of the Windows Insider Program.

Since then, the company has released build 9860 on October 21 and build 9879 on November 12, the last one for this year. Yet all these previews were focused on enterprise and power users.

Next year, Microsoft is expected to release new builds primarily aimed at consumers, starting in January. In April, during its Build conference, the company will share more details pertinent to developers, and presumably continue releasing new builds as well as tools for them.

The biggest Windows 10 news, however, is likely to come out next month. We’d be lying if we said we’re not excited!
