Some people are reporting early issues with new Halo 5 beta, and the only fix may take a few hours.

Microsoft and developer 343 Industries’ beta for Halo 5: Guardians started this morning, and plenty of people are putting the new shooter to the test. But some are finding it difficult to get the beta to work (which is expected at this point in the development cycle). Issues include a red triangle that appears next to the “Slayer” playlist that seems to indicate that something is wrong. Other people are encountering a flashing-screen bug where Halo 5 fails to connects to a game server. While bumps like these are typical of a beta test, fans of the Halo franchise are still bummed that they can’t get online. But some people are having luck fixing at least some of the problems by uninstalling and reinstalling the game data for Halo 5 (thanks to Eric Smith for the tip).

If you’re encountering issues — especially if you are seeing the red triangle — go through these steps to uninstall and reinstall your game.

  1. Hit the Xbox button on your controller to go to the home screen.
  2. Find the Halo 5: Guardians beta either on the home menu or in the “My Games and Apps” area.
  3. Hit the menu button on your Xbox One controller.
  4. Scroll down to “manage game” and select it.
  5. On the left, you should see an option for “Internal, manage all.” Click that.
  6. Select “Uninstall all.”
  7. Confirm that you want to uninstall.

At this point, the Xbox One should take a few seconds to delete the data for Halo 5. Now, we need to go ahead and reinstall it:

  1. Hit the Xbox button on the controller to go back to the home screen.
  2. Go to “My Games and Apps.”
  3. On the “Games” tab, scroll on the way to the right.
  4. You should see a number of tiles for games that are “Ready to install.”
  5. Find Halo 5: Guardians, and select it.
  6. The game should download and install.

This process will take some time, but when it’s back up and running, you may now have a working version of Halo 5.

Let us know if this helped or if you have any other tips for getting the beta up and running.
