Why choose one console when you can have two?
Serial modder Eddie Zarick has brokered peace between the big console rivals, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, by cramming them both into a single laptop-sized system with a 22-inch screen. He’s created what he calls the “PlayBox” for a special customer who requested both systems in one portable device.
Zarick has previously created laptop versions of both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in his spare time, selling them for $1,500 and $1,400 respectively via his website Ed’s Junk. This new superconsole, which Eurogamer spotted, is a one-off, though, and Zarick isn’t taking any further orders for it.
At least, not yet.
Zarick’s ingenuity in crafting these custom systems is a great example of the creativity at work within the gaming community, and the fact that people actually buy them — paying around three times the price of the standalone consoles — shows how much some folk love to game.
The guts from the two consoles sit side-by-side in the PlayBox, and everything works pretty much as you’d expect. With only one power connection, though, you have to alternate between using the PS4 and Xbox One, and Zarick has had some trouble getting the PS4’s power button to work. Still, you can always power it on and off using the DualShock 4 controller.
The Playbox isn’t quite as portable as you’d expect, as it requires a constant power connection in order to work. Still, it’s a pretty neat gaming solution if you’re limited for space and have a small stack of disposable income you’re happy to blow.
