If you like executives saying exactly what they have to say and no more, then Microsoft has a treat for you.
The Xbox One outsold the PlayStation 4 in the U.S. during November and December, and that led Xbox boss Phil Spencer to take a victory lap. But while the console business continues to pick up for Microsoft, Spencer didn’t miss the opportunity to remind PC fans just how necessary the company’s upcoming Windows 10 operating-system upgrade is when it comes to gaming. Without getting into the specifics or whys, the executive said that Windows 10 is potentially the “best operating system we’ve ever created for gamers on PC.”
Microsoft has an event planned for Jan. 21 to reveal the “consumer experience” of Windows 10. Spencer will speak about games during that briefing.
“For the Xbox team,” Spencer said in a video on the Xbox news site, “this is the beginning of our discussion with fans about the work that we’re doing to bring gaming to the Windows 10 operating system. It’s really nice to finally get to be able to talk about this. We’ll continue the conversation throughout the year.”
Microsoft, and Spencer in particular, have started promising a new emphasis on PC gaming in recent months. The man responsible for the Xbox One’s resurgence after its shaky launch admits that the company, which makes the bulk of its money from personal-computer software, has failed to fully support gamers on Windows.
The company has not provided any details yet about how that support will pan out, but Spencer did provide some hints.
“We know that we have fans that also play games on PC and phone,” he said. “And it’s important that we build out the features that we have — learning from what we’ve done on console — to make Windows 10 the best operating system we’ve ever created for gamers on PCs.”
