HTC’s new One M9 is a hot phone, heats up to 130 degrees in one benchmark test

The new HTC One M9 phone was one of the hot new phones announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this month. Now tests are showing that the phone is hot in other ways, too.

The Dutch phone site Tweakers put a series of flagship phones through some benchmarking tests and noted that the M9 heated up to 55.4 degrees Celcius — that’s over 130 degrees Fahrenheit — during the tests.

The benchmark test used by Tweakers is called GFXBench, which includes some high-powered gaming apps.

The M9 runs on the widely used Qualcomm 810 processor, which some have claimed to run hot. However Anandtech ran tests on the chip and found no overheating issues.

In HTC’s defense, the M9 is not yet generally available, so the software inside the device Tweakers tested is not yet final. And, as far as we can tell, Tweakers tested only one M9 phone, so the overheating problem could be confined to that one device.

HTC says it doesn’t comment on tests of unreleased software.
