Final Fantasy XI gets one last scenario before shutting down on PS2, Xbox 360

For once, it’s literally a final fantasy.

Square Enix has announced one last major content update for its 2002 massively multiplayer online game, Final Fantasy XI. The new scenario is Rhapsodies of Vana’diel, and the first part of it will come out in May, according to Eurogamer. In March 2016, Square Enix will shut down the console versions of Final Fantasy XI on PlayStation 2 and Xbox 360, but the PC version will continue to operate without any substantial new additions. Oddly, Square Enix is working on a mobile version of Final Fantasy XI to come out that year.

It’s been a good run for Final Fantasy XI. While it never reached the success of World of Warcraft, which has over 10 million subscribers, the MMO was able to last for 13 years. It was also one of the first of its kind to come out on consoles. Before it, similar online games, like Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast, had a much smaller scope than traditional MMOs.

Still, its end isn’t totally surprising, since Square Enix has the newer Final Fantasy XIV on the market, which is performing well with over four million registered players.
