A rare 1976 Apple-1 computer went up for auction on eBay yesterday afternoon, and the asking price has already soared to more than $20,000. The bidding had some big jumps, including bids in $300 intervals.
The computer, which originally sold for $600, was built in Steve Jobs’ garage. It was owned by a single family for 36 years. And it’s one of only 63 surviving Apple-1 computers, eBay says.
The auction is part of an eBay Giving Works “The First Apple Auction” running April 13 to April 23. The auction also includes other Apple collectibles, including:
- A very early and low serial number Apple II from 1977-1978
- 1976-1977 Apple Computer design drawing copies from Apple founder Ronald G. Wayne
- Autographed items from Steve Wozniak and Ronald G. Wayne.
The online auction service says a percentage of the proceeds will go directly to the ALS Association, a national nonprofit organization fighting Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
