LOS ANGELES — Bethesda has given the world a better look at its anticipated role-playing game, Fallout 4, at its pre-E3 press briefing today.
It comes out on Nov. 10 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC and takes place in a postapocalyptic Boston. It’s the first new game in the series since 2010’s Fallout: New Vegas.
A demo for the game showed a voiced main character, with a face sculpted by the player. You can be a man or a woman. You also have a robot butler, because who doesn’t want a robot butler? You also get to play before the nuclear detonations that create the Fallout world fans know. After some unknown events, you wake 200 years later in a ruined Boston.
The main character also befriended a dog and was able to tell him to go places and grab him items. The VATS system, which lets players pause the action and select specific enemy body parts to shoot, also returned. Bethesda claims that this is the most ambitious open world it’s created yet.
The Pip-Boy also returns, and you can even play games on it (including a Donkey Kong clone). Bethesda is also releasing a real Pip-Boy with a collector’s edition of the game, which you can insert your phone into. You can also download a Pip-Boy app for your iOS or Android phone or tablet. The Pip Boy Edition will cost $120. It also comes with metal packaging, a poster, a pocket guide, and a stand for your Pip Boy.
Fallout 4 also allows players to scrap in-game items and create their own buildings and directions. This attracts people who will live in your town. You also have to defend your settlement from raiders.
You can customize your own weapons and power armor. A trailer even showed a suit that was able to hover.
Bethesda is treating Fallout 4 as a premiere game, having it close out its E3 briefing. It also revealed a Fallout mobile game, Fallout: Shelter, a free-to-play title that is rolling out now.
