Update at 8:30 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday: Sony says PSN is back up and running.
Weekdays are always a wonderful time for some online gaming, but that’s only if the PlayStation Network can handle it.
Sony has confirmed that the PlayStation Network is experiencing connectivity problems. This is preventing gamers from playing online multiplayer releases like Destiny and Call of Duty, but you may even run into problems launching primarily single-player games that rely on a connection to a third-party server or apps like Netflix. Additionally, Sony’s PlayStation Store is also offline.
This is also the first day that Sony has offered its “free” PlayStation Plus games for July, and it’s possible that gamers are slamming the network trying to download those goods.
The company is working now to fix the outage.

“You may be experiencing issues related to launching games, applications, and/or social features such as trophies, messaging, or friends list,” reads the Sony status page. “You may [also] be experiencing issues related to features on PlayStation Store. We appreciate your patience while we address this.”
We’ve asked Sony for an explanation as to why this keeps happening, and we’ll update the post with any new information. Additionally, these kinds of outages are intermittent and sporadic, and they do not affect everyone equally.
Previous update at 5:40 p.m. Pacific time on Wednesday: Sony has updated its status website to say that PSN is experiencing problems, but the outage does not seem widespread.
