In one of the year’s most unlikely team-ups, indie hit The Escapists is mashing with The Walking Dead, the hit comic-book and TV series.
Players will control protagonist Rick Grimes in the zombie-infested world of The Escapists: The Walking Dead which releases on Xbox One and PC later this year. It will feature key characters, locations, and story elements from the comic books while retaining the escape and crafting mechanics that have helped The Escapists — created by the single-handed developer and ex-construction worker Chris Davis — sell over 600,000 copies.
We’ve already seen one great game series based on the zombie franchise from Telltale Games, but we’ve also had one hugely disappointing first-person shooter license in the form of The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct. The Escapists’ quirky humor and 8-bit art style might prove a surprisingly worthy champion for The Walking Dead’s moody, end-of-the-world vibe.
The gameplay in The Escapists: The Walking Dead sees Rick Grimes finding safe passage for his group of survivors through various locations that match the timeline of the comics.
Walking Dead fans can try out the game at this weekend’s Walker Stalker Fan Fest taking place in San Diego’s Petco Park, just down the road from the Comic Con convention.
