Apple opens iOS 9 and OS X El Capitan betas to the public

Apple has made the beta versions of both its OS X El Capitan and iOS 9 operating systems to preview by the public.

Both betas can be accessed at the Apple developers site. Until now the previews were available only to developers.

The new iOS 9 adds some under-the-hood fixes for stability, performance, and privacy, as well as a much smarter personal assistant in Siri. It also features a new News app, which we previewed yesterday.

The latest iteration of OS X Yosemite, El Capitan, offers a package of stability improvements. The biggest usability improvements include a split-screen mode and natural language search functionality. We took a spin through it a couple weeks ago.

Apple has said that the betas are not necessarily the final versions of the OSs. Some features and interface features could still move around.

It’s also worth noting that with iOS 9, beta testers may experience some instability and bugs. Apple is providing a FAQ page containing information on how to roll back to iOS 8.4 if need be. We experienced no major problems in the developer previews of the operating systems.

Apple announced both new operating systems at its Worldwide Developers Conference last month.
