Dragon Quest XI announced for Nintendo NX, PlayStation 4, and 3DS

Nintendo NX has its first games.

Square Enix announced Dragon Quest XI this morning to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the seminal console role-playing game franchise. It’s for the PlayStation 4, and 3DS, and the codenamed Nintendo NX. This is the first game that a publisher has confirmed for Nintendo’s upcoming system, a console we don’t really know anything about (the Japanese company says it won’t reveal any details on the NX until 2016.)

So far, this new Dragon Quest is also only for Japan, something that’s inline with the publisher’s recent strategy for the series.

Square Enix is also going to bring Dragon Quest X to the NX. Unlike most Dragon Quest titles, Dragon Quest X is a massively multiplayer online role-playing game. It has previously come out for Wii U, Wii, 3DS, PC, and Android. However, it has never come out in the U.S., and we don’t know if the NX version will finally make it overseas.

The PlayStation 4 version of Dragon Quest XI will use Unreal Engine 4. The 3DS version simultaneously shows a more modern, 3D version of the game on the top screen and a old-school, sprite-based version on the bottom.
