Minecraft has grown into one of the biggest and best-selling games of all time by empowering players to make their own stories. In about two weeks, we’ll get a chance to see if the franchise still works when someone else is doing the writing.
Minecraft: Story Mode, the latest game from The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games, is starting soon. The first episode will go live on consoles, PC, and smart devices October 13. This adventure will tell the story of a number of new Minecraft characters voiced by some of the top talent in Hollywood. Story Mode will likely follow the formula of other Telltale games, which has previously brought franchises like Game of Thrones and Fables to life with an interactive, choice-based story.
To get fans pumped, Telltale released a new trailer for Minecraft: Story Mode’s first episode, and you can check it out below:
This is our best look at Minecraft: Story Mode yet, and it really makes the game look like an interactive cartoon. This franchise has never really had a deep narrative — although developer Mojang has given its blocky world some lore.
Telltale has taken that lore and given it a treatment that feels — at least in the trailer — a bit like an old Disney Channel cartoon adaptation of one of that studio’s animated films. That’s not a bad thing as The Lion King’s Timon & Pumbaa, 101 Dalmatians, and Lilo & Stitch: The Series all had their own kind of charm.
We’ll have a review of Minecraft: Story Mode up as soon as possible, and we’ll do our best to let you know if this series can work beyond its original incarnation.
